My year long secret project is now… public!

Posted on 20. Jul, 2010 by Jess in Uncategorized

So most of you know me for me freelance infographics and the Death and Taxes poster. However for the past year, myself and a small team of developers, artists and smart folks have been laboring away on a project in an entirely different space. Turn based online strategy gaming.

I am super excited to announce that MajorCommand.com is now in public beta.

What is MajorCommand.com? It’s a site where you can get together with other folks and play Risk online. You know Risk, that board game of the world and all those little pieces. Well MajorCommand.com is like that only thrice as awesome with great new features, new maps, and a great community. majcomblog1

I have always loved strategy gaming. Civilization was an obsession, Rise of Nation and other RTS’s were an addiction, the Total War series was great fun. But after a while I just didn’t have the time to sit down and play for long stretches or consistently. Even trying to play the board game Risk with friends was difficult now that my friends all had busy lives too.

That’s where MajorCommand.com comes in. The game involves deep strategy, but each player gets 24 hours to take their turn. This means that generally you can play your turn at the same time every day, like before bed, or with your morning coffee, or at lunch. It may seem that 1 turn per day would take forever but I have been playing 10-15 games at a time this way. There is always a turn to take when I want to take one. So games end up taking days, weeks, even months to finish. It’s an epic experience.

Freelance design and Death and Taxes will continue to be part of my business for a while, but designing, building and creating something larger from the ground up, as well as leading a team to success is something I have always wanted to do. So I hope y’all don’t mind if MajCom related posts make their way through this blog.

I have had the time of my life working with some seriously talented people to put together the best casual strategy gaming experience on the web. We are still in beta and have quite a list of feature to continue building out, but the potential for awesomeness here is huge. So enlist, and be a part of something pretty freaking cool.

majcomblog3I invite you take a look-see. If you like strategy and are looking for a casual gaming experience, you will enjoy this. I like to think of it as 3-5 minutes of strategic thinking a day to get my mind going. We have some challenging players here who will give veteran Risk’rs a run for their money. We also have a lot of first timers who and learning the ropes and kicking ass in the process.

Oh I forgot to mention, it’s totally free. And once you are there, invite me to a game, my there is Badorties. Don’t worry, I’ll take it easy on you.

Wow, this sounds amazing! Great work on this project, I can’t wait to get playing. The design is beautiful - although I’d expect nothing less. Good luck with the project.

This looks great, but hasn’t it already been done with warfish.net? You win in terms of visual appeal though.
